The Queen Returneth

Many bloggers and journalists have mourned the absense of the reigning olympic champion Yu-Na Kim during the recent grand prix series. A lack of charisma and performance particularly in the ladies event have left many of us hoping for her to return and inject some star quality back into figure skating again.

But the olympic champ has not been idle. Her long time choreographer, David Wilson has travelled to Yu-Na's new training base in LA and together they have created new programmes for her return. The short programme is to Giselle and the long is a 'Homage to Korea' including the famous folk tune Arirang. A tribute to her home country for the support they have shown her.

Yu-Na explained her music choices - "David Wilson had often recommended Arirang (one of the most famous Korean folk music) for program music. However, I had my reservations because I thought it was never the right time. After the success at the Olympics, I thought now is the right time to give back to the people of Korea and to thank them for their enthusiastic support."

Her new coach Peter Oppegard says "It's a new level of sophistication in her movement. When we first met, the first thing she mentioned was about further enhancing her artistry. This program allows Yuna to expand her already well-known artistic abilities to new horizons." (Universal Sports)

Yu-Na will debut her new programmes at the World Championships in Tokyo in March. Her competitors may be dreading the queen's return. The audience cannot wait!

All That Skating

The 2010-11 figure skating season doesn't start proper for another 3 weeks, but most of the stars from Vancouver are busy this weekend with 4 major shows/competitions taking place.

First -3 of the 4 Vancouver olympic champions can be seen at the Staples Centre for Queen Yu-Na's All That Skate LA.

Yu-Na's first major show in North America and Michelle Kwan's first time performing for a home crowd since 2006. There is no doubting Yu-Na is an international star - but she may not be the biggest star in LA. The full cast includes.

South Korea Kim Yu-Na
United States Michelle Kwan
United States Ashley Wagner
Canada Patrick Chan
Switzerland Stéphane Lambiel
United States Johnny Weir
People's Republic of China Shen Xue & Zhao Hongbo
Germany Aliona Savchenko & Robin Szolkowy
Canada Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir
United States Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto

Aunt Joyce has linked to videos from the show here.

Also State-side, the Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular is taking place in Texas. The cast for this is somewhat more limited (as many skaters are in Yu-Na's show and many gymnasts are busy training for worlds) but includes Evan Lysacek, Nastia Liukin, Meryl Davis and Charlie White, among others.

On the other side of the world. The Japan Open was taking place with Team Japan taking the honours (barely) over a very strong looking Team North America. Joannie Rochette put in the best Ladies performance and Adam Rippon topped the men. Mao Asada debuted her new free skate which had some lovely qualities but the jumps aren't all there yet.

Videos for many of the Japan Open skaters can be found online already - follow these links to youtube.
Joannie Rochette, Miki Ando, Mao Asada, Daisuke Takahashi
Adam Rippon, Cynthia Phaneuf, Jeffrey Buttle, Evgeni Plushenko, Takahito Kozuka

And Finally, the JGP Great Britain is wrapping up. The medallists were: -

Ladies
Adelina Sotnikova (RUS - 166.70)
Yasmin Siraz (USA - 161.75)
Yuki Nishino (JPN - 135.58)

Men
Joshua Farris (USA - 187.74)
Zhan Bush (RUS - 172.80)
Liam Firus (CAN - 166.38)

Commonwealth Chaos

Excitement for the upcoming commonwealth games in Delhi has been tarnished as the first teams to arrive have found not only filthy conditions in the athletes village, flood waters near the site breeding mosquitoes and even competition venues falling around them.

Several nations have even threatened to pull out if things don't improve and fast. The organising commitee stands fast that everything will be ready in time. The british gymnastics teams are still in training and planning to fly out Monday. I personally want to see all the gymnasts still attend and do well, and for them all to stay healthy (particularly the ozzies, many of whom are also due to compete at Worlds.)

Speaking of Worlds. The GB world team have been training together at the Lilleshall sports hall and posed held a media day. Photos can be seen on the BG facebook page . Several more nations have also announced their world teams this week.

Romania
Sandra Izbasa, Ana Porgras, Diana Chelaru, Raluca Haidu, Ceresela Patrascu, Gabriela Dragoi, Amelia Racea (one will be the alternate)
Argentina Ayelén Tarabini, Lucila Estarli, Aldana Carraro, Delfina Ortuño
Australia
Georgia Bonora, Ashleigh Brennan,Emily Little, Larissa Miller,Lauren Mitchell, Georgia Simpson,Georgia Wheeler

Also in the world of skating. The JGP has headed to Japan this week with several rematches of medallists from some the earlier events this season. The senior international season is also kicking off with the Nebelhorn trophy in Germany.

Several of the names to watch at Nebelhorn include-
Ice Dance
Anna Capellini and Luca Lanotte - the italian olympians won the short dance earlier today.
Natalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat- always crowd favourites
Alex and Maia Shibutani - promising US juniors for several seasons now- hoping to make a splash on the senior scene.
Ladies
Kiira Korpi and Jenna McCorkell are the seasoned faces.
Ashley Wagner of the US has withdrawn due to illness and will be replaced by Melissa Bulanhagui.
Mens
Long time favourite of mine Kevin Van-Der-Perren appears to be still putting off retirement. If he's healthy I'd predict a two horse race between him and Michael Brezina for the title.
Pairs
The promising young russian team Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov are the favourites here, although I couldn't like to count out Megan Duhamel of Canada and her new partner Eric Radford.

Also Queen Yu-Na has told the LA times that she has settled in well in California, she is looking for an appartment and will announce her new coach next month. As it is someone based in the LA area some potential names include Rafael Aratunian, John Nicks, Frank Caroll, or maybe even Michelle Kwan (unlikely - but it would be cool!)

Where do we go from here?

I was pondering this evening where 'Queen Yu-Na' will go if she chooses (or is forced) to leave the Cricket Club.

I could think of only two places that would do for her.

The Granite Club in Toronto is another exclusive private club and the base (for at least some of the time) of Lori Nichol, Kurt Browning and Patrick Chan. I'm sure Yu-Na could get plenty of first rate coacing and ice time here and would not have to sever all ties with Toronto. But with Canada skaters so loyal to Brian - would she really get a warm welcome?

However- if Yu-Na wants more of a change of scene she might consider moving to Michelle Kwan's family rink, the East West Ice Palace in Artesia, California. This place is busy with californinian skaters (Caroline Zhang being one of them) but I'm sure Yu-Na would be welcomed. I'm sure the biggest star in Korea would suit LA rather well.

I can't see Yu-Na going to Russia as however big a star you are you must slog it there. And life in Korea would still be just to crazy if she still wants to train and compete.

Meanwhile

French Skater Yrethra Silete has surprised many and won the short program at JGP france. The skater who's best finish on the JGP to date was 6th place at the event in Dresden last week scored 48.67. This put her narrowly ahead of Polina Shelepen (RUS, 48.11) and Nina Jiang (USA, 48.06). I have a feeling the russian will take it in the free skate but is would be great to see this french unknown hold on for a medal at home.

(Photo of Silete by David Carmichael)

In the men's competition Canada's Andrei Rogozine topped the short programme (64.52) ahead of the two americans Max Aaron (64.31) and Jason Brown (58.00).

All the US skaters competing in the Senior Grand Prix this season are in Colorado Springs for Champs Camp- which this year includes a monitoring competition.

I'm sure all the interviewers will be wanting a few words from Adam Rippon on the situation back at the Cricket Club!

Mirai Nagasu won't be skating at the camp as she has a stress fracture in her foot (this girl has ROTTEN luck!) She is due to be back on the ice September 1st. However it seems to be lucky she made it to the camp at all given these tweets:
Woke up today...at 10...got ready to go to the mall....and then...
I checked my email and realized I've got a plane to catch!! Hello Champs
camp!!:)

Gotta love that girl!

The Plot Thickens

Like several bloggers I'm actually starting to enjoy this scandal in skating paradise!

Alongside her english twitter message the other day where she accused Brian Orser of lying. Yu-Na Kim also posted a full statement in korea on her website. A translated version is available here.

Part of her statement reads :

Do you really think that my mother would decide to split with the coach on her own?

I am no longer a child. (Brian Orser) was my coach and it is my final decision whether I decide to continue with him or to part ways. After consulting with my mother and upon careful consideration, this is the decision we made.

Of course, there was the problem regarding the offer to coach another skater , but do you really think that is the only reason? Just reading Brian Orser's interviews, it seems as though we were thoughtless and disrespectful and all of this is our, no, my mother's fault. Are you going to believe what he says at face value?''

This Other Skater refers to her long time rival Mao Asada as the Japan Skating Federation approached Brian to take over Mao's coaching after the games thinking that Yu-Na would retire.

Brian has seemed to make an effort to dispel some of the rumours going around about who said what to who by showing the media a copy of the email he sent to Yu-Na whilst she was in Korea

Subject: rumours
Date: Sun, 25 Apr 2010
20:46:04 -0400

Hi Yuna, hope you are well and getting some rest. i am sure you have heard some of the rumours that have been going around about Mao. I just want you to know that I am loyal to you and am always here for you. Her agency did inquire about me ( and team ) working with her, I told them that you are my first priority. I have to say that I was flattered she has an interest, but your skating comes first.

Let me know if you have any concerns or thoughts. I wanted to contact you and tell you how this all happened.

When are you arriving? and do you have any idea what you are feeling for next year? maybe we should talk about this.

All the kids are missing you here at the club.

Please be in touch. B

This all seems well and good and we would probably all be back on Brian's side of the fence were it not for the fact that he announced Yu-Na's free skate music to the media as well. She is due to skate to a collection of Korean music including the song Arirang (read about it here)

"It's a fantastic program, by far the best one I've seen," Orser said. "It is well beyond even her Concerto in F. It's a complete departure."

Kind words- but he has ruffled more feathers.

Choreographer David Wilson- the only member of the cricket club still on neutral ground has broken his silence to say that he was shocked by Brian announcing this.

Yu-Na's agency said "This can only be construed as a move intended to hurt the skater."

"This started as a simple issue of a skater and coach going their separate ways. We do not want this standoff and accusations to go on any further. We strongly urge Mr. Orser to put an end to the unfounded claims and refrain from disclosing confidential information about Yu-Na Kim's future competition plans."

This is getting juicy now! Brian still insists that he will not coach Mao Asada but he does have some of the top american skaters still under his wing.

Min-Jeong Kwak, Korea's number 2 skater who moved to Toronto around the time of the games has also left Orser. Hardly surprising since she is also a member of Yu-Na's agency and basically shares a slice of Yu-Na's fame. A shame though as she was beginning to blossom under the care of the cricket club.

So that was round 3- bring on round 4

The questions remain- if Yu-Na leaves the cricket club (which I'm guessing she will) Where will she go and who will coach her?

Will she do what Mao did in '08 and go it alone?

Will she come back to competition at all?

Time will tell...............

More Yu-Na news.

This interview with Brian Orser seems to shed some more (though not much) light on the Yu-Na Kim coaching shenanigans. Both parties seem to be acting for some reason as if this seemed to come as a surprise which I don't get. I must say I'm not so sure about Yu-Na's mother's 'agent powers'. But ho hum, what can be done?

Article from the star

First, Olympic champion Kim Yu-na’s camp gave Brian Orser the cold shoulder. Then, they showed the coach who took her to figure skating’s pinnacle the door.

Orser and fellow coach Tracy Wilson got the word earlier this month from Kim’s mother Park Mi-hee that their services were no longer required to guide the 19-year-old national hero from South Korea.

“It was very much a surprise,” said Orser. “There was really no valid reason. I still don’t understand why they did this. I don’t know. It came out of the blue. They sat down with me and Tracy and said we’re not coaching her anymore. And that was that.”

Kim blossomed under the tutelage of Orser and Wilson, who trained her out of the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club, winning the world title in a landslide in 2009 and then overwhelming the field at the Vancouver Olympics to win the gold. Orser was a popular figure in South Korea, and was even featured in a commercial.

Orser and Wilson got the news from Kim’s mother at a meeting on Aug. 2 — the skater wasn’t present. He said he waited three weeks before issuing a release Tuesday because he thought there might be a change of heart and things could be worked out.

Orser, a former world champion and two-time Olympic silver medalist, found the reasons for their dismissal given by Park Mi-hee rather lame.

“They just felt that we had not given much attention to Yu-na, but at the same time she was kind of talking out of both sides of her mouth.,” he said, “She had told us to move forward with other students.

“We were just waiting to get our orders from the mother because that’s what we always did. She always told us when they were ready to move in a certain direction and we had a meeting and we got pen and paper out and we did a plan. We never got to that point.”

Kim’s management company AT Sports later released a statement saying relations between the skater and coach have been “uncomfortable” since May.

Orser said that’s not the case.

“I spoke with her the other day … She seems confused about what’s going on. Because of all this turmoil with her mother, she doesn’t know what’s going on. Nor do I. That’s what I said to her, ‘I’m a little confused, but it’s been a great four years,’” said Orser.

“We just needed to have a little chat with her before I did this (went public), that the last four years were really magical and we had such a great thing and we support her in whatever direction she wants to go. She wasn’t part of any of these decisions about letting us go.”

Orser made it clear money was not an issue at all.

“None of this was over any kind of finances at all. No contract issues. I never had a contract with them from the beginning. I don’t now. There was no issue about bonuses or anything like that. This had nothing to do with money at all.”

Both Orser and Wilson had consciously decided to give Kim some space after the Olympics to figure things out because it had been such an emotional season and decisions had to be made.

“It’s one of those things you can’t force,” he said. “You have to make your choices and your decisions for the right reasons.”

Orser said he got the blessing from Kim’s mother to work with other skaters during the summer. Orser said she told him not to make any time for her daughter because they were unsure of their plans for the off-season.

Orser was left out of the loop all summer, including when Kim went off to Korea in July to do some shows. He read on the internet that she was pulling out of the Grand Prix events for this coming season but planned to compete at the world championships.

“I thought it was a little unfair that I had to read it on the internet, that they never consulted with me at all,” he said. “I kind of figured there was something up there.”

He further suspected something when he got a telephone call from former world ice dancing champion Shae-Lynn Bourne telling him that she would be choreographing Kim’s short program this season.

“It’s fine, but I wasn’t consulted on that, either,” said Orser. “I sent numerous emails to both her agents and to Yu-na when they were in Korea in July and I didn’t get one single response back from them.

“I was asking them what’s going on and saying I’m getting some media interest so I need to know what to say. There was literally not a single response, not one ‘Here’s what to say,’ or ‘We’ll talk to you when we get back.’ I even emailed at the end of it: ‘When are you coming back to Toronto?’ There was not even a response there. It was really kind of pathetic.

Orser is philosophical moving forward. He’s working with a pair of fast-rising Americans Adam Rippon and Christina Gao, among others.

“I’ve got some great kids. I love my job, I love my work and I’ll continue to. I’ll probably lose more kids along the way.”

Also - contemplate Yu-Na's twitter message posted today (Before that she hadn't tweeted a thing in weeks) - Would you please stop to tell a lie, B? (Brian??) I know exactly what's going on now and this is what I've DECIDED.

There's something more behind this than has been leaked to Joe Public.........Yet.

Shocker!

I woke up and checked my twitter this morning to read some news no-one expected

Olympic Champion Yu-Na Kim has split with her coach, Brian Orser!

Figure Skaters Online reports:
Meehee Park, Yu-Na Kim’s mother and a representative with AT Sports (Kim’s agency), met with Brian Orser and Tracy Wilson on August 2 in Toronto, Canada. They both informed the two-time Olympic Medalist that he would no longer be retained to coach Kim. No reason was given for the sudden and unexpected decision. At the present time Kim continues to train at the Cricket Club in Toronto, Canada.

Under Orser’s four year successful tutelage Kim captured the World Championships, the 2010 Olympic Gold Medal in Vancouver and countless other titles. In addition to Kim, Orser coaches many future hopefuls including U.S. skaters Adam Rippon and Christina Gao.

“I am honored to have worked with such a talented and gifted skater,” said Orser. “I wish her all the best as she moves forward in her skating career.”

---------------------

I cannot uncerstand the reasons for this at all. Yu-Na has been very lucky at the Cricket Club to have a full coaching team including her choreographer there all the time. Not to mention the protection she has had from the media hoard!

I read that David Wilson coached Yu-Na through her shows in Korea. The only reason I can see is that there was some dispute with Brian after the games that we don't know. This is sad news all the same.

Olympic Alphabet - B is for....

... Bringing your Best (When it counts)

Most athletes or olympic hopefuls visualise their perfect olympics- putting out your very best performance. Standing on the podium with a gold medal and the National Anthem playing. But whether or not you end up with a medal- most olympians remember whether or not their olympics performance was the best it could be.

Those who did-
  • Yu-Na Kim- smashed personal and olympic records with her performance in Vancouver to win by a landslide. Under all the pressure she delivered- hence the well earned reaction from her (and her coach, Brian)
  • Nastia Liukin - Won the all around competition not just on the difficulty of all her skills - but by the fact that she performed each of her routines about as well as she ever had.
  • Michael Phelps - 8 golds, 8 world records- can't get much better than that!
  • And many many more!
Those who couldn't
  • Carolina Kostner - buckled under the pressure at her home games in Turin and missed the chance to redeem herself four years later in Vancouver- will the third time be the charm?
  • Cheng Fei- gave her all for the team, her brilliant floor routine securing China's team gold in gymnastics in Beijing- but when it came to doing it for herself in the individual finals- she fell short.
  • Alicia Sacramone- may never forgive herself for her 2 falls in the Team final in Beijing- but she's started a successful comeback in search of olympic redemption!

.... B is also for Beth

The flag-carrier for GB gymnastics and inspiration to so many young gymnasts. Beth Tweddle showed that this wasn't just a sport for tweenagers and that it is possible to develop into a champion gymnast over time.

This year Beth became an MBE - Member of the order of the British Empire- a royal honour not usually bestowed on athletes until they return home, olympic medal in hand. However the award is given for 'services to sport' - something Beth has given in bundles!

Beth did not have her best performances in Beijing- narrowly missing the bars, floor and team finals. Hopefully London 2012 will be her time. With the rapid improvements of team GB gymnasts- its looking good!

By the way- if you have any better suggestions for the Olympic Alphabet- feel free to comment and propose them!

Yu-Na does it again.

I just got back from the gym in time to watch the second half of Yu-Na's show. Thanks to 'Aunt Joyce' for posting a link on their blog to a live feed.

Videos and photos are already popping up everywhere on the web. As expected it was a great success and the crowd went crazy. Yu-Na's hip-hop exhibition to Bulletproof was lots of fun and similar to her 'don't stop the music' piece from last year.

Sasha Cohen broke the mould a bit with her sexy fun performance from cabaret- fishnet stockings and all. Watching Michelle skate was as ever a treat - even though her music choices were a bit poppy and didn't show her off as well as a beautiful classical piece would. Yu-Na and Michelle's duet to hero was a tad cliche, but still special.

My favourite performance was in fact Min-Jung Kwak's performance to 'Don't rain on my Parade' She too has come on leaps and bounds in Brian Orser's camp and is now quite the performer. Great news for Korean skating as Yu-Na likely waves a gradual goodbye to competition.

All That Skate Summer

Yu-Na's ice show is taking place in Korea later today. In an interview David Wilson said Yu-Na had been preparing for this almost like an international competition.

Rehearsals seem to have been going well and I'm sure with the cast of big names and Yu-Na fever still raging in Korea- photos and videos will be swamping the internet instantly.

See more rehearsal pictures here

With Mao having her own show, THE ICE, in Nagoya this weekend - maybe 'international competition' was right!

Good and Bad news.

The Spelbound boys showed they can carry out a 42 show tour of the UK and still be the best in the world. Adam Buckingham, Adam McAssey, Alex Uttley, Jonathan Stranks won the gold medal for men's group at the world championships in Poland. Also Douglas Fordyce & Edward Upcott won the men's pair and team GB brought home a collection of other medals too. British Gymnastics says the aim now is to get Acrobatic Gymnastics recognised as an olympic Sport.

Yu-Na Kim has announced what will be disappointing news for her fans in Korea and elsewhere in the world. She will not be skating in the Grand-Prix season or at the Asian Games in February. She still plans to compete this season but only at the world championships. Having felt burnt out after the olympics she has chosen to only compete as she feels ready too. On the upside she has just arrived in Korea to take part in her own ice show with Michelle Kwan and others. The announcement appeared in The Korea Times

Golden Girl

Susan Russell from International Figure Skating posted photos of a celebration for Yu-Na Kim at the Toronto Cricket Club, where she trained for the last 4 years.

Yu-Na was congratulated for her many achievments - including a commemorative plaque that will be displayed at the club. She was also thanked for the inspiration she was for all the young skaters in the club - showing them what it takes to reach the very top of the sport.

A busy weekend.

Apologies for the lack of updates, I've been away at my cousin's wedding this weekend. Most of today's news comes from other people's blogs and websites that I was browsing through when I got back. I promise to be more proactive in future!

The list of competitors for the USA Covergirl Classic is up, and it's pretty full. Those competing include Bridget Sloan , Rebecca Bross, Alicia Sacramone, Kayla Williams, Mattie Larson, Samantha Shapiro, Alexandra Raisman, Jordyn Wieber, Kyla Ross, Sabrina Vega and many others. View the full list here.
Those we won't see (unsurprisingly for most) - Olympians Nastia Liukin & Shawn Johnson and the still injured Ivana Hong.

British gymnast Daniel Keatings has blogged on his progress, 7 weeks after surgery to repair his ACL. He remains positive and ahead of schedule in his rehab. Maybe he is still planning to make a comeback before the end of the season. Good luck to him! Thanks to 'Full Twist' for the link.

Georgia Bonora did win the Australian championships- read the article from international gymnast magazine.

According to blogger 'Aunt Joyce' Olympic Silver Medallist Sasha Cohen, and former US pairs champ Rockne Brubaker have had a pairs tryout- If they form a partnership it could be very exciting.....

Also from Aunt Joyce - Yu-Na Kim is now a Goodwill Ambassador for Unicef. Yu-Na donated $100,000 to the Haiti Earthquake appeal earlier this year and recently spoke in this message to other donors.

Oh yeah, and I think there's some football going on today too....

News Bits

Georgia Bonora is leading the All Around competition at the Australian Gymnastics hampionships. You can read a great article by the Gymnastics Examiner here, or Australian Gymnastics here.
The nationals will help to decide the World and Commonwealth teams.

American Skater Johnny Weir is taking this season off to try and develop his skating and persue his other interests.
(Surprise Surprise!)

You can read a full article from icenetwork as well as a written statement from Johnny.

Johhny tweeted "I am sorry to disappoint you all. I will be back. Don't be sad. I love you so much."

To be fair, Johnny has been focusing more on the celebrity than on the skating recently. But he says he'll be back so we'll watch and wait.

If he and Evan both sit out Nationals this year it will make way for a new wave of talent.

Also, Michelle Kwan and Yu-Na kim are to skate a duet to Maria Carey's song 'Hero' in Yu-Na's show - All That Skate Summer. Yesterday was Michelle's 30th birthday. That these two champions who have done so much for the sport have a mutual appreciation society is great.

Also Liza Tukatmysheva, one of Alexei Mishin's group of young, talented skaters is training what looks like an easy triple axel. Liza is 13 now I believe- is she finally old enough to compete internationally this year? Watch a video here.

Turkish skater Tugba Karademir had retired from skating to focus on university.

Brian's Gang.

The Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club is becoming a hotspot for skating talent. Brian Orser, 2 time olympic medallist wasn't sure he wanted to be a full time coach until his first and now star pupil, begged him to coach her full time. That pupil is of course Yu-Na Kim.

Given the success and popularity of Yu-Na, other young skaters flocked to Toronto. Brian coaches two american talents- Adam Rippon (2009 Junior world champion, 2010 Four Continents Champion) and Christina Gao (who pleasantly surprised everyone by finishing 5th at US nationals in her senior debut). Gao has already been compared by many to a young Yu-Na or Michelle Kwan.

Also Brian has a growing collection of 'little Yu-Nas' teenage korean skaters Min-Jung Kwak (who finished 13th at the olympics as Korea's second entry) and recently 2008 Korean junior champion Yea-Ji Yun.

Icenetwork also reported former world champ Brian Joubert is traning in Toronto for 6 weeks this summer. This isn't a permanent arrangement (yet...) but the frenchman is currently coach-less so we'll see.
